Validity assessment of SAMOSA retracking for fully-focused SAR altimeter waveforms

چکیده
We demonstrate in this work how we can take advantage of known unfocused SAR (UF-SAR) retracking methods (e.g. the physical SAMOSA model) for fully-focused (FF-SAR) waveforms. Our insights are an important step towards consistent observations sea surface height, significant wave height and backscatter coefficient (wind speed) with both UF-SAR FF-SAR. This is particular interest altimetry coastal zone, since clutter may be filtered out more efficiently high-resolution FF-SAR waveform data, which has potential to improve data quality. implemented a multi-mission processor Sentinel-3 (S3) Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich (S6), using back-projection algorithm, analysed ocean statistics compared multilooked UF-SAR. find that averaged power waveforms over virtually identical, while better resemble zero-Doppler beam. explain model similarities differences via theoretical considerations integrals. These findings suggest use existing S3 but beam S6 waveforms, instead. Testing outlined approach short track segments, obtain range biases between lower than 2 mm 5 cm.

Retracking ERS-1 altimeter waveforms for optimal gravity field recovery
S U M M A R Y We have reprocessed ERS-1 radar altimeter waveforms using an algorithm designed to minimize sea surface slope error and decouple it from significant wave height (SWH) error. Standard waveform retracking estimates three parameters—arrival time, SWH and amplitude. We show that errors in retracked estimates of arrival time and SWH are inherently correlated because of the noise charac...
متن کاملRetracking Jason-1 Altimeter Waveforms for Marine Gravity Recovery
In order to construct improved maps of marine gravity anomalies, we have developed and tested retracking methods for determining sea surface slopes from radar altimeter return waveforms collected by the Jason-1 mission. The accuracy of marine gravity models derived from satellite altimetry depends mainly on two factors: first, the density of ground tracks covered by the mission, and second, the...
متن کاملCramér-Rao bounds for radar altimeter waveforms
The pseudo maximum likelihood estimator allows one to estimate the unknown parameters of Brown’s model for altimeter waveforms. However, the optimality of this estimator, for instance in terms of minimizing the mean square errors of the unknown parameters is not guarantied. Thus it is not clear whether there is some space for developing new estimators for the unknown parameters of altimetric si...

Scientific Applications of Fully-Focused SAR Altimetry Alejandro Egido, NOAA/CICS-MD & Walter Smith, NOAA The delay/Doppler algorithm implemented in CryoSat-2 and Sentinel-3 applies a coherent processing the 64 echoes within each burst (about 3.5 milliseconds of flight), which allows narrowing the footprint in the direction along the track to about 300 m. However, by accounting for the phase ev...
